The basketball season got off to a rough start for the East Webster Wolverines last week as both teams dropped games to homestanding Philadelphia.
The Lady Wolverines lost 63-50 while the boys squad fell 50-36.
“We are really young on both teams,” East Webster coach Jon Ginn said. “It will be a struggle as we get these freshmen and sophomores some playing experience but I think we are going to be OK.”
In the girls contest, the Lady Wolverines led 15-11 at the end of the first period but the Lady Tornadoes outscored East 18-6 in the second to lead 29-21 at the half. The Lady Tornadoes extended the lead in the third by outscoring East 11-7 to take a 40-28 advantage in the fourth.
“We played really well the first quarter and most of the second and then sort of lost our minds for about two and a half minutes,” Ginn said. “And we never really overcame that in the second half. But hopefully it’s something we can learn from as we go forward.”
Lauren Graves led the Lady Wolverines with 17 points while Shamia Culpepper had 14 points and Shan Culpepper added seven points.
In the boys contest, the Tornadoes outscored the Wolverines in every period to take the 14-point win. Philly led 8-4 at the end of the first and 23-10 at the half. Philly stretched the lead in the third, outscoring East Webster 15-8 to lead 38-18 going into the fourth. East outscored Philly 18-12 in the fourth for the final margin. Reed Gatlin led East Webster with 13 points.
