With time dwindling down in the fourth quarter, East Webster football coach Ron Price fulfilled a promise to senior Isaac Jones.
Jones capped off senior night with 6-yard touchdown run and then gave an emphatic victory spike, much to the delight of his teammates as the Wolverines took a 31-0 senior night win over Bruce.
With the win, the Wolverines finish the regular season with a 9-1 record and will host Walnut in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs as the No. 2 seed out of Division 4-2A.
The Wolverines got another solid effort from the defense which held the Trojans scoreless.
“The defense again has been consistent since day one,” East Webster coach Ron Price said. “We were a little nervous because of the field conditions. Our field was wet and with it being senior night and the last home game, we wanted to send those seniors out with a big win. I thought our guys handled the ball well. Bruce drove down late and we were able to pick it off in the end zone and not letting them get any momentum. I thought that was really big.”
After trading punts to start the game, East Webster finally got going on offense on its second drive. The Wolverines went 55 yards in eight plays as Steven Betts scored on a 9-yard run with 4:58 left in the first. Parker Burleson booted the PAT and East led 7-0.
Bruce put together a 10-play drive on its next possession but turned the ball over on downs when a fake punt failed. The Wolverines then went 50 yards in three plays as Betts scored on a 44-yard run with 9:00 left in the second quarter.
Bruce put together a 12-play drive on its next possession but the drive ended when the Trojans threw an interception in the end zone that was picked off by Jon Cunningham.
The Wolverines then went nine plays and got a 35-yard field goal from Burleson as time expired to take a 17-0 lead lead at the half.
“We didn’t have a lot of possessions and I thought the interception was big and being able to drive down and get the field goal was huge,” Price said. “I thought Parker did a good job of kicking and adjusting to the field. It could have been 14-7 but with that stop and the field goal, it was 17-0. I thought that gave us a lot of momentum going into the half.”
In the second half, the Wolverines didn’t score again until late in the third as they went 61 yards in seven plays as Tyrik Pittman scored on a 1-yard run with 1:34 left in the third. Burleson’s PAT was good and East Webster led 24-0.
After holding Bruce on downs, the Wolverines went 33 yards in four plays as Jones scored on a 6-yard run early in the fourth quarter. Burleson’s PAT was good for the final margin of 31-0.
The Wolverines finished the game with 300 yards of offense with 286 yards rushing. Betts had 166 yards rushing on 14 carries while Tyrik Pittman had 75 yards on 14 carries.
On defense, Ethan Roberts led the way with 10 tackles. Caleb Massey had six tackles while Luke McKee, Daniel Rogers, Conner Shurden and Kainan Reed each had five tackles apiece. Carter Flora, Kendell Carden, Isaac Jones and Camron Jennings each had four tackles apiece while Kobe Smith and Jon Cunningham each had three tackles apiece. Cunningham also had an interception.
