Coming off an emotional win over rival East Webster on the road last week, the Eupora Eagles had a big opportunity ahead this week to try to wrap up the No. 2 seed in Class 2A, Region 2.
The Eagles had Bruce and J.Z. George but were unable to capitalize on taking over that number two spot as they split the two games.
It was a heartbreaking start to the week for the Eagles as they were hoping for back-to-back Region 2 wins. Coming back home to take on Bruce, the Eagles lost a 24-21 halftime lead with a tough fourth quarter and couldn’t climb back in it as the Trojans snuck away with a 52-50 win.
Zak Morris poured in 21 points for the Eagles and four 3-pointers in defeat and Perron Hill had 13.
What made the loss equally more frustrating is the Eagles were able to come back and get a win later in the week against JZ George. The Eagles won 58-52 thanks to Hill’s 26 points and Morris’ 14.
The Eagles (3-9, 2-2 Region 2) have a big challenge this week as they will host Houston on Tuesday and Winona on Friday.
GIRLS
A strong effort from the Lady Eagles earlier in the week came up just short against Bruce as they fell 53-42. It was the highest scoring affair of the year for the young Eupora team as M’Nyjah Young put up 21 points. The Lady Eagles led 24-23 at the break but they couldn’t duplicate the defensive success in the second half as Bruce came out of the locker room and scored 18 points in the third quarter to take over the game.
That rolled over to the next game against J.Z. George in which Eupora lost 44-29. Two points in the third quarter would be killer for a Lady Eagle team trying to stay in the game after a 23-17 deficit in the first half.
Rakaysha Triplett led the Lady Eagles (1-13, 0-4 Region 2) in scoring in the loss to J.Z. George.
