After a tough season, the Eupora Eagles can get a bit of redemption this week as they open up the MHSAA Class 2A State Football playoffs.
The Eagles will go on the road to they travel to Walnut to take on the Wildcats.
Walnut is 9-2 on the season and finished as the No. 2 seed in Division 1-2A.
The Wildcats have wins over Falkner (38-6), Alcorn Central (48-16), Middleton, Tenn. (65-32), Myrtle (30-6), South Pontotoc (42-14), J.Z. George (28-25), Potts Camp (39-27), Strayhorn (20-17) and Mantachie (36-14). Their losses are to East Union (42-7) and Scotts Hill, Tenn. (41-19).
“We watched them play Mantachie and got a good idea about them,” Edwards said. “They have a real fast running back and a big tailback who looks like he weighs about 200 pounds. They have a big offensive line and do the same thing they have done for years. They run a 3-stack on defense and blitz a lot of guys. We have to find a way to move the ball and move the chains. We are going into that third season and have to take advantage of the opportunity that is put in front of us.”
Edwards said he thinks the Eagles, who are 3-7 on the year, have a good shot at getting a win on Friday night.
“I think if we play well, we can win,” Edwards said. “We have to want it and we will find out. I think after watching them that we have a good chance. I think we match up well with them and if we play well, you never know what can happen in the playoffs.”
The Eagles are coming off a bye week to end the regular season and Edwards said his team should be well rested going into this week’s game.
“It was a different week, I don’t know if it was good or bad,” Edwards said. “We got rested up and healed up for the most part. It rained a couple of day and we lifted weights and watched film those days. I’m just ready to get that third season started and getting back to some normalcy.”
