French Camp track teams saw their first action of the season this week in a two-part practice meet at Winona Tuesday and Thursday. The first official meet will be March 23 at Madison Central.
The boys and girls teams will both be strongest in the distance events. The Panthers will be led by junior Colby Walters, who was fourth in 800 and 1600 at last year’s 1A state meet.
Senior Ami Sherrif is the top performer for the Lady Panthers. She was third in the 800 last year and took second at the 1A state cross country meet in the fall.
Other key boys athletes include junior Phillip Caradine in the sprints, junior Adlai Urbina in middle distances, Lyric Owens, a seventh grader, in the distance events, and senior Jason May, who was third in the pole vault at last year’s state meet.
Coach Joe Watkins said Urbina is “a really talented athlete, really driven. I expect good things from him.”
Watkins is also high on Owens. “He’s working really hard. I’m excited to see what he can do,”
Other girls include sophomore Tessa Mullins, freshman Maddi Davis and Averie Jane Gundy, an eighth grader, in the distance events, and freshman Emma Wright in the sprints. Wright is also playing softball.
