CORRECTION: WA FOOTBALL ROSTER
An inaccurate copy of the Winston Academy football roster for 2019 was run in the 2019 Football Preview edition that was inserted in last week’s Winston County Journal. The roster used was pulled off the MaxPreps site and was presented as the 2019 roster. After further inspection it was obvious that already graduated players were listed. The Winston County Journal regrets the error.
A corrected version of the WA roster, provided to us by the school, appears on page 14 in this week’s paper.

FCA DEFENSIVE BACK OUT WITH BROKEN FINGER
An off the field injury hurt French Camp Academy’s pass defense. Senior defensive back Holt Barlow suffered a broken finger when he dropped a weight on it. “He mashed it pretty good,” FCA Head Coach Nathan Wright said.
“We were already pretty thin at defensive back. They torched us pretty good in the second half,” he said of FCA’s 34-24 season-opening loss to Winona Christian Wright is not sure how long Barlow will be out. “They told him originally three weeks.”

WINONA TAKES ADVANTAGE OF EXTRA TIME
Eupora went into halftime down 13-6 to Class 3A Winona on Friday night. Then the strangest thing happened. The officials came into the Eupora locker room and told coach Stephen Edwards that there was still seven seconds on the clock due to an error by the clock operator.
The Eagles then went back out to finish the half and 15 seconds were placed on the clock. Three plays later, Winona scored on a quarterback keeper and took a 21-6 lead into the second halftime on the way to a 28-6 win.
Edwards said it was an odd situation and one he has never seen before. “We go into halftime and it was 13-6 and we are feeling pretty good about where we are at,” Edwards said. “We are just one play from being tied and then they tell us there are seven seconds left. We go out there and they give them 15 seconds and they got three plays and scored on the last one. I have never been a part of something like that before where you go into halftime and 10 minutes later they tell you to come back out because of an error by the clock operator. It was a crazy night but we have to overcome those things.”

ANOTHER SIP FROM ‘LITTLE BROWN JUG’
The longest consecutively played high school football rivalry in Mississippi will take place in Laurel this week when the Tornadoes host Hattiesburg. This will be the 98th ‘Little Brown Jug Game’ that began back in 1922. Laurel leads the Jug series 47-45-5. The teams have also met three times in the MHSAA playoffs with Laurel winning two of those contests. Those games do not count in the Little Brown Jug series. Hattiesburg has held possession of the Jug since 2014.
Hattiesburg and Vicksburg each played their 1,000th high school football game this past weekend. Hattiesburg fell to Petal while Vicksburg lost to Madison Central.

CCHS OPENS ROBERTS ERA WITH VICTORY
Choctaw County began the Jeff Roberts' era by running for 464 yards in a 34-20 victory over Independence. It was Roberts' first game as the Chargers' coach.
“We want to run the ball and we did that effectively,” he said, adding that the Chargers have to get better in the Red Zone. “I think we could have scored a couple more touchdowns. But I can't fault the effort of our linemen and runners. They broke some long runs.”
Quarterback Tylan Carter and sophomore running back Dicenzo Miller did most of the damage, each scoring twice and coming close to 200 yards apiece. Miller had 18 carries for 195 yards and Carter 20 for 189 yards. Carter also completed four passes for 76 yards.
