Choctaw County opened Region 4-3A play with a dominating performance in a 37-14 victory over Aberdeen. It was 27-0 after one quarter, 34-0 at the half and 37-0 before Aberdeen got on the scoreboard against Choctaw County reserves.
The victory was the third straight for Choctaw County, improving the Chargers record to 4-3.
“The defense played phenomenal,” said coach Jeff Roberts, who declined to single out any players. “They all played well together. I’m proud of them.”
Not to be outdone, the offense led by quarterback Tylan Carter scored touchdowns on all five first-half possessions. Carter threw two TD passes to Kendall Coleman and one to Preston Payne and scored on a one-yard run. Dicenzo Miller scored the other TD on a 25-yard run.
Trace Beard accounted for the rest of the scoring with four PATs and a 30-yard field goal.
The Chargers totaled only 282 yards of offense, 215 on the ground, but Roberts said that was because the defense kept providing good field position.
Carter was four of six passing for 56 yards. Carter, Miller, Coleman and freshman Antonio Kennedy took turns running the ball effectively. Carter had eight carries for 57 yards, Miller 10 for 55, Kennedy six for 55 and Coleman three for 24.
Roberts was impressed by Kennedy. “This was his best game for lowering his shoulder and running through people.”
Aberdeen (1-6) scored two fourth quarter touchdowns against Choctaw County reserves. “We had a bunch of young kids in there,” Roberts said. “They gave up a long run and a long pass, but that’s okay because the young kids need to play.”
Connor Jewell, a sophomore, replaced Carter at quarterback, completing one pass for 11 yards and running once for 11 yards. “He threw one that could have been a touchdown,” Roberts said. “The defensive back made one of the best plays I have seen.”
Choctaw County has won three straight after losing three in a row. “We have limited our mistakes,” Roberts said. “We kept grinding and went to practice every day. They never got their heads down.”
