It has been an outstanding academic year for Choctaw County teams, with football, volleyball, boys and girls basketball all having successful season.
“We have had tremendous success so far. We anticipate more in the spring,” said athletic director Ben Ashley, who is also the Charger football coach. “In the short four and a half years of Choctaw County High School, so far this particular year has been the most successful.”
The school resulted form the consolidation of Ackerman and Weir in 2013.
The football team won MHSAA Region 4-3A and won two playoff games to reach the state quarterfinals. The volleyball team won Class I, Region 3, and won one round in the state playoffs. Both basketball teams reached the state quarterfinals with two playoff victories after winning the Region 4-3A tournament.
“The stars are aligned,” Ashley said. “We have a good little senior class of athletes. We have great coaches in place. We have an administration that supports us.
“When you have good seniors to lead you, when you have great coaches and an administration that supports athletics, often that leads to success.”
Ashley expects the good times to continue in the spring. “Baseball is off to a great start. We anticipate a good year in track, we anticipate a good year in softball, we anticipate a good year in golf and archery as well.”
Standout senior athletes include Austin Telano in football and baseball, Allie Brown in volleyball and softball, Brysa Maxwell in basketball and softball, Laiana Cork in volleyball, basketball and softball, Austin Fulgham in football and baseball, Amerious Brown in football and basketball, Adam Threadgill in football and baseball and Akeem Kirkwood in basketball.
