Led by senior Tres Gammill, the Choctaw County golf team won the MHSAA 2-3A championship for the fourth year in a row, qualifying for the state tournament in the process.
Choctaw County had a team score of 350 at the 6,380-yard par 72 Pontotoc Country Club, 25 strokes better than runner-up Water Valley.
Gammill was medalist with a round of 82. Other Chargers were sophomore Preston Payne with 86, senior Adam Threadgill, 89, and sophomore Spencer Powe, 93.
Although the scores were higher than normal, coach Gary Beals was pleased with his team's performance under the conditions. “The course was damp. They had had a lot of rain. It was misting rain early in the morning.”
The 36-hole 3A state match was played this week at Patrick Farms in Pearl. The Chargers finished fourth last year behind three-time defending champion Booneville, Belmont and St. Andrew's, the host team this year.
