Choctaw County will conclude Jeff Robert's first spring practice as head football coach with a jamboree Saturday at Starkville High School. The opponent will be New Hope.
Roberts is pleased with the progress the team has made. “Way better than I could have anticipated, so I'm very pleased.”
The format for Saturday is three quarters of varsity action and one quarter for the junior varsity, with a running clock.
“I'm still evaluating to see who can do what, who can play what positions,” Roberts said. “There have been some standouts.”
Choctaw County will be changing from a Wing T to a spread offense and Roberts said the jamboree will give his players action in the new system. “I want to see who shows up ready to play. Who can step up when it comes to game time. I think they all will.”
In particular, Roberts said the jamboree will give game experience to some of the younger players.
He was hired last month to replace Ben Ashley, who resigned after two years as the Chargers’ head coach. Roberts was defensive coordinator at Water Valley the past six years, culminating with the 3A state championship last fall.
