Austin Telano led Choctaw County to a 5-2 Region 4-3A win over Nettleton last week with his bat and his arm. A second game with Nettleton was rained out and will be rescheduled.
Telano picked up the win, pitching the first five innings, allowing four hits and one run. Billy Ray Evans finished up, allowing one hit and an unearned run, with two strikeouts in two innings.
“Both of them pitched really well,” said coach Andy Young.
Telano improved his record to 3-1 with an 0.36 ERA in 19.2 innings. He also had a single and a walk, drove in one run and scored one.
The Chargers improved to 3-2 in the region and 10-3 overall. “I was really proud of them getting a good division win away from home,” Young said.
Choctaw County is tied for second in the region with Nettleton. Houston leads with a 6-0 record. South Pontotoc is 3-3, Hatley 1-4 and Aberdeen 0-5. The Chargers have two games left with both Aberdeen and South Pontotoc and one with Nettleton. The Chargers played South Pontotoc Tuesday and have a non-region home game with New Hope Thursday.
Choctaw County is sixth ranked in the state among 3A schools by the website MaxPreps. The team's two region losses came against Houston, the top ranked 3A team.
Lady Chargers remain perfect 5-0 in league play
The Choctaw County softball team lost to one of the state best's teams, a 10-3 defeat at the hands Kosciusko, that ended a six-game winning streak for the Lady Chargers.
Coach Lance Thomas said Choctaw County trailed 5-3 before Kosciusko broke the game open in the late innings. “We were battling. The girls played hard the whole game.”
The Lady Chargers had eight hits, including two each by Lizzie Thomas, Shakeria Smith and Akira Taylor. Thomas had two doubles and drove in two runs. Freshmen Kelly Hood and AnnaLeigh Jones led an 11-hit attack for Kosciusko, each with a single and triple.
Kosciusko is the fifth ranked team in the state for all classes and second ranked in 4A.
Choctaw County is 6-2 overall and leads Region 3-3A with a 5-0 record. A region game with Charleston was rained out last week and rescheduled for April 16. The Lady Chargers also have two region game remaining against Ruleville Central.
“Hopefully we can get in some kid of groove before the playoffs,” Thomas said.
The Lady Chargers were to Philadelphia Tuesday and have a home game Friday against Louisville.
