A busy week for the Choctaw County baseball team resulted in two wins and two losses. The Chargers defeated Nanih Waiya 8-7 in nine innings and Kirk Academy 13-3, but lost to East Webster 4-3 and Sebastopol 17-7.
Nanih Waiya was a back-and-forth game, the winning run scoring on a squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth. “That's how we have rolled this year. So far we have played small ball,” said coach Andy Young.
After Nanih Waiya went ahead 4-2 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Choctaw County scored once in the sixth, then took a 7-4 led with four runs in the seventh. Nanih Waiya responded with three in the bottom of the inning, forcing overtime to set up the dramatic finish.
Landon Wells and Connor Jewell both had big games for Choctaw County. Wells had three hits, drove in three runs and pitched 4.1 innings, with five strikeouts.
“Landon threw like the pitcher I have been waiting for him to throw the last couple of years,” Young said. “Justin Jenkins came in and showed a lot of promise. They couldn't have pitched any better if I had drawn it up on paper.”
Jewel had three singles and a double, drove in three runs and scored twice.
Wells also had a homer in the win over Kirk at the Winona Dixie Roofing Tournament. Clark Crowley had a single and double, Micah Gammill doubled, Tyson Coleman had two hits and Jenkins drove in three runs. Jewell, Kole Vowell and Brian Threadgill combined on a five-inning three-hitter.
Choctaw County used the bunt repeatedly and successfully during the game.
East Webster was held to three hits, but scored all of its runs in the second inning. “We should have beaten East Webster,” Young said.
Sebastopol broke open a close game with seven runs in the fourth. Wells had two hits and scored twice and Jewell drove in two runs. Ethan Boleware doubled twice, singled, drove in one run and scored four for Sebastopol.
The Chargers played Eupora Tuesday and have a home game with Louisville Friday.
