First year Choctaw County head football coach Jeff Roberts is pleased with what he has seen on the practice field and in the weight room headed into the 2019 season.
“Things have gone pretty well,” he said. “We have been focused.”
He declined to single out any players for praise. “I hate saying this kid has done better than that kid, or that kid has done better than this kid. I feel uncomfortable doing that.”
He opened the weight room Sunday for the first time on a sabbath and 43 players showed up. Roberts feels that is an example of the players dedication and enthusiasm. “I was really pleased with that number...The goal in the weight room is to maintain our strength. We'll do a heavy weight day, then we will do a rep day, a bunch of reps with light weights. We like to do the heavy weights on Sunday to give their bodies a little time to rest.”
The Chargers have a scrimmage at Pontotoc Friday with two quarters of varsity play and one quarter for the junior varsity. “I just want to see us compete and have a lot of guys get reps,” Roberts said.
The regular season begins the following Friday with a home game against Independence.
