Choctaw County put it all together to break a three-game losing streak with a 48-7 victory over Kosciusko.
Offensively, the Chargers averaged 11 yards an attempt, running for 385 yards. The defense pitched a shutout through three quarters, allowing 161 yards, much of it coming late in the game after Choctaw County had substituted liberally.
It was 21-0 after one quarter as Choctaw County scored on its first three possessions. “The very first drive we kind of ground it down the field,” said coach Jeff Roberts. “We ended the drive on a quick pass to Kurt Coleman.”
Tylan Carter connected with Coleman on a 12-yard scoring pass to begin the onslaught.
“The next possession, we ran an option and Tylan kept it and took it to the house. That was the big 81-yarder.”
That was followed by a 55-yard scoring pass from Carter to Preston Payne. Carter added 56-yard TD run in the second quarter. “He broke loose on the sideline,” Roberts said. “I was getting ready to call the next play when he just cut back. You couldn't see him and there he was for a touchdown.”
Dicenzo Miller ran for two touchdowns and the Chargers made it 48-0 when backup quarterback Connor Jewell connected with Ques McNeal on a 22-yard scoring pass. “I put him (Jewell) in on third and long,” Roberts said. “I was going to let him get a throw it. Lo and behold, he threw one pass and he threw for a touchdown.”
Choctaw County outgained Kosciusko by nearly a three to one margin, 474-161. Carter carried 10 times for 192 yards. He completed only two passes, but both went for touchdowns totaling 67 yards.
Miller had 14 carries for 113 yards and Antonio Kennedy six for 61.
Kentaveus Washington ran 17 times for 80 yards and Kosciusko's long touchdown.
Roberts gave credit to both lines. He said the offensive line did a good job blocking the previous game, a 23-20 loss to unbeaten East Webster. “We just made mistakes that we can't make. This week, they continued that momentum of blocking well and we limited the mistakes.”
The defensive line dominated, especially early in the game. “They did a really good job stuffing the inside run.”
For the season, Choctaw County is averaging 301.6 yards per game on the ground and 83 through the air.
Carter is averaging nearly 10 yards with 75 carries for 733 yards and six touchdowns. He has completed 31 of 57 passes for 393 yards and four TDs. Miller has 66 carries for 500 yards (7.6 average) and six TDs and Kennedy, a freshman, 18 carries for 212 yards (11.8 average) and one six-pointer.
Coleman leads in pass receptions with 13 for 108 yards, Payne in receiving yards with five catches for 174 yards and McNeal in TD receptions with three.
