It was an evening of celebration as a large crowd of parents, friends, family and fans gathered at the Nanih Waiya Attendance Center gymnasium to honor the 2018 Warriors football as they received their championship rings.
On November 30, 2018 the Nanih Waiya Warriors defeated a Hollandale-Simmons team that had won 54 games in a row, exactly 364 days after coming ever so close to defeating the same team in 2017. The Class 1A Title marked the first ever football state championship for the school.
Head Coach James Courtney thanked his coaching staff for the incredible amount of time spent working with the team, and pointed out the dedication of the staff, faculty and community who continually rally around the school, no matter what the activity is. State Representatives Michael Ted Evans and Joey Hood spoke briefly to the crowd, and State Senator Jennifer Branning read a Mississippi Congressional Proclamation honoring the Nanih Waiya team.
NW Principal Belinda Swart said that the championship has meant so much to the entire community, and it has set a special tone for the entire school year.
Players, cheerleaders, managers and coaches all received a beautiful championship ring to honor the achievement that is so significant to this school.
