Southern Mississippi (41-14, 23-7) won their sixth and final Conference USA regular season baseball championship with a three-game sweep on Middle Tennessee this past weekend. The Golden Eagles will now host the Conference Tournament sponsored by The First, which begins Wednesday. The Golden Eagles’ opening game will be at 4 p.m. on Wednesday against UAB. The Eagles, who have won five conference tournaments, are the only C-USA team to take part in every conference tournament.
Ole Miss (32-21, 14-16) lost two of three games to Western Division champion Texas A&M. The Rebels will now turn their attention to Hoover, Alabama, and the SEC Tournament that begins Tuesday for Ole Miss. The Rebels are the No. 9 seed and will battle No. 8 Vanderbilt on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a play-in-game in the tournament. The winner of that game will take on No. 1 seed Tennessee in the opening round of the double-elimination format.
Mississippi State (26-30, 9-21) lost all three games to No. 1 Tennessee last week in posting their worst season since 2010. The Bulldogs did not qualify for the SEC conference tournament as they lost 12-of-13 games to end the season.
Jackson State (29-25, 16-14) is seeded fourth out of the East in the SWAC baseball tournament in Birmingham at Regions Field. The Tigers will take on the top seed from the West in last year’s tournament champs, the Southern University Jaguars (24-29, 21-9), on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
William Carey (37-17) completed their season last week in Georgia losing both contests in the NAIA opening round. Belhaven (28-16) completed their best season since 2009. Delta State (32-17) lost in the Division II South Regional to complete their season.
Pearl River Community College won the Region 23 Tournament and will head to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Oklahoma, which begins on Thursday.
MSU Lady Bulldogs make history
Mississippi State softball (37-25) stunned No. 2 Florida State (57-7) twice Sunday to win the Tallahassee Regional. MSU will now advance to play Arizona in their first Super Regionals in program history.
Ole Miss’s (41-19) season came to an end against UCLA in the championship game of the Los Angeles Regionals.
Belhaven softball (41-8) saw their historic season come to a close falling to No. 2 Texas Lutheran in the NCAA Division III Super Regionals championship game.
State Championships
The MHSAA will host their state baseball championships in Pearl this week at Trustmark Park beginning on Tuesday. Biggersville will meet Resurrection in the Class 1-A series, Stringer will meet East Union in 2-A, Amory will meet Seminary in 3-A, Sumrall will meet Pontotoc in 4-A, Neshoba Central will meet East Central in 5-A and DeSoto Central will meet Northwest Rankin in 6-A. The NFHS Network will stream all six games on the first two days Tuesday and Wednesday. Bounce TV will air the Thursday and Friday second games of the best-of-three series. The third games will be played on Saturday and Sunday, if necessary.
The MHSAA crowned their 2022 state champs in Hattiesburg this week at Southern Mississippi. East Webster, Taylorsville, Booneville, Kosciusko, Neshoba Central and Petal all took home the gold. It was Neshoba Central’s ninth straight state title in Class 5-A.
The Mississippi private school baseball champions were crowned last week with Prentiss Christian; Claiborne, La.; Marshall; Magnolia Heights and Jackson Prep taking home the trophies.
The Mississippi Braves won 4-of-6 games against the home standing Biloxi Shuckers last week. Both teams are now 18-21 on the season. Biloxi will host Montgomery this week while the Braves travel to Pensacola.
The winner of the Ferris Trophy named for former Delta State baseball coach Boo Ferris was scheduled to be named this week in ceremonies at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
Hattiesburg native Davis Riley finished 13th in the PGA Golf Championship over the weekend. Davis is now ranked 33rd in the FedExCup Standings.
