The Mississippi State Bulldogs cagers are on a hot streak with five consecutive wins. The hot Bulldogs are now up to No. 28 in the latest NET rankings as they are headed for a possible second consecutive NCAA tournament berth. The Bulldogs (19-8, 8-6) whipped Ole Miss and LSU last week. State will have their hands full this week as they will play host to high scoring Kentucky on Tuesday before heading to the Plains on Saturday to take on Auburn. The Bulldogs will then travel to Texas A&M next Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs (20-9, 7-7) dropped two more games this week in losing at home to Kentucky and at Alabama. MSU is now on a four-game losing streak and will end regular season play as they travel to Auburn on Thursday and host Missouri this Sunday. The SEC Women’s Tournament will begin on Wednesday, March 6, in Greenville, South Carolina.
Ole Miss has hit a cold streak as they fell to both Mississippi State and South Carolina last week. The Rebels (19-8, 6-8) will host Alabama on Wednesday before traveling to Missouri on Saturday. The Rebels will also meet Georgia on Tuesday, March 5.
The Lady Rebels (19-7, 9-4) downed Georgia last week and will play at Kentucky on Thursday before closing at home versus Arkansas. The Lady Rebels are vying for one of the top four seeds in the SEC Tournament.
Jay Ladner returned to Reed Green for a few minutes to honor his six seniors in their final home game at USM. The visit certainly inspired the USM players and fans as they rolled over Louisiana. USM (9-7, 16-13) will travel to South Alabama on Wednesday and Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday night to complete the regular season.
The Lady Eagles split two games as they fell to Louisiana-Monroe but rebounded for a nice win at Arkansas State. This week, the Lady Eagles (9-7, 16-11) will be at Texas State on Wednesday before heading to Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday night. The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will begin on March 5 in Pensacola.
The Jackson State Lady Tigers (19-7, 14-0) downed Alcorn while in the men's game the Braves downed the Tigers, 87-73, in overtime.
Millsaps (24-4) won the Southern Athletic Association Conference Women’s Tournament this weekend, hosted by the Lady Majors as they defeated Centre, 68-63, in the finals. The Lady Majors earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Mississippi College Lady Chocs took two games from Delta State white the DSU men took two from the Chocs. The conference tournament will begin on campus sites on March 5.
Baseball News
Southern Mississippi (5-2) won three of four games which included taking two of three from Scott Berry’s alma mater Missouri State over the weekend. This week, USM plays Nichols State on Tuesday in Biloxi before returning home for a weekend series with Indiana State. The Eagles will also play at Trustmark Park in Pearl on Tuesday, March 5, against Mississippi State.
Mississippi State baseball (4-4) took two of three over the weekend from Georgia Southern. The Bulldogs will welcome Georgia Southern to Starkville this weekend. The Bulldogs host Jackson State on Tuesday of this week and then will entertain Mount Saint Mary this weekend.
Ole Miss (4-4) split their four games this past week which included taking two of three from High Point over the weekend. The Rebels will host five games this week with Little Rock (Tuesday), Missouri State (Wednesday), and a weekend series with Iowa. The Rebels will also host Memphis next Tuesday, March 5.
Four SEC baseball teams are undefeated in Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Texas A&M. Five teams have only one loss in Florida, Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee.
MHSAA Notes
This week, the Final Four MHSAA Basketball Tournaments will be played within the various classes at the Mississippi Coliseum. There are four winners from the North and South State Elite 8 heading to Jackson.
