The Southern Miss Golden Eagles swept Louisiana Tech over the weekend to improve to 10-1 on the season. The Sunday win over Tech gave Golden Eagles head coach Christian Ostrander his 100th win at USM. Coach Oz reached 100 wins in only 137 games, which is the fastest in school history. USM will host Mississippi State on Tuesday and Nicholls State on Wednesday before North Alabama visits Friday-Sunday.
Mississippi State fell to top ranked UCLA, 8-7, in ten innings in Arlington, Texas, in the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series. The loss was the first for the Bulldogs (11-1) this season. The Bulldogs had defeated Arizona State and Virginia Tech before falling to UCLA. MSU will travel to USM this Tuesday and then host Lipscomb this weekend.
The Bulldogs will play Tulane in Biloxi on March 10.
Ole Miss lost two of three games in the Bruce Bolt College Baseball Series played in Houston. The Rebels (10-2) lost to Baylor and Coastal Carolina but blanked Ohio State over the weekend. Ole Miss will play host to Memphis and North Alabama before hosting Evansville over the weekend.
The Rebels will travel to Southern Miss on Tuesday, March 10.
The Belhaven baseball team is off to a fast 7-0 start under first year head coach Patrick Robey.
Basketball
The Ole Miss Rebels downed Auburn Saturday to end their ten-game losing skid. Ole Miss (12-17, 4-12) will play host to Vandy and South Carolina to complete regular season play.
Mississippi State fell to Alabama and Missouri this past week. The Bulldogs (13-16, 5-11) will play at Florida and host Georgia this week.
The SEC tournament begins in Nashville on March 11.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles blasted South Alabama in their final regular season contest. USM (16-15, 9-9) is seeded eighth in the Sun Belt Tournament this week in Pensacola. The Golden Eagles will not play until the third round on Thursday at 5 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
The Lady Golden Eagles (15-15, 8-10) are seeded seventh in the Sun Belt Tournament and will play Thursday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Rebels (21-10, 8-8) are seeded seventh in the SEC Tournament this week in Greenville, South Carolina. They will play the winner of Texas A&M and Auburn on Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs (18-12, 5-11) are seeded 13th in the SEC Tournament and will play 12th seed Florida on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
The William Carey Lady Crusaders won their first ever Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. They edged UT-Southern, 62-58, in the finals. The Lady Crusaders (24-5) claimed the SSAC automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament and will have to wait until Thursday to see whom they will play on March 13.
The Crusaders lost a heartbreaker to Dalton State in the SSAC Men’s championship game. William Carey (27-4), the regular season conference champs, will find out Thursday about their March 13 opening round opponent in the NAIA National Tournament.
The Millsaps Lady Majors defeated top seed Trinity in the Southern Athletic Association Conference Basketball Championship. The win gives Millsaps the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. It was the Lady Majors' (21-7) second SAA title in three years. Millsaps will find out this week their opening round opponent.
The Belhaven Blazers (16-12) won their first conference tournament championship over LaGrange. The Blazers, winner of six straight, will now advance to their first NCAA Division III national tournament that begins Friday.
The Delta State men and women both advanced to the Gulf South Conference tournament. The Statesmen (11-16) seeded eighth will play at top seed West Alabama. The third seeded DSU Lady Statesmen (17-10) will host sixth seeded Valdosta State.
The Alcorn Lady Braves (16-11, 13-3) have a solid hold on second place in the SWAC basketball standings.
The MHSAA will host the state basketball championships in Jackson as they crown 14 new champions. Play began on Monday and runs through Saturday.
