The Winston Guards 2643 chapter of the UDC met on Monday night, March 5, 2018, for their monthly meeting at Lake Tiak O’Khata.
The speaker for the meeting was Connie Faye Estes who talked about women who served in the North and South armies as soldiers, spies, nurses and in the camps in various jobs. She also mentioned that children of some of the women spies were used as couriers because children were not under suspicion when passing through enemy lines.
The UDC ritual and the Pledge of Allegiance and salutes were led by Mrs. Woodruff.
Mrs. Estes reported on the ongoing project of sending Christmas and Birthday Cards to all of the residents of the Veterans home in Kosciusko. Earline Stewart Treasurer gave a report on the chapter finances and reported that a little of $400 has been donated toward getting a Historical Marker of Grierson’s Raid passing through Winston County.
President Frances Woodruff, who is Vice President General of the UDC, told about her trip to Richmond, Virginia for the annual Spring Board Meeting. She was accompanied by Sylvia Purvis of the Attala County chapter. On their way home they visited historic sites in Richmond and in Virginia.
The hostesses for the meeting were Sandra and Emily Holdiness. They chose a Spring theme for their decorations.
The meeting was closed by those members present holding hands and singing the first verse of “Blest Be The Tie.”
