Members of the Town & Country Club met in the lovely home of Mrs Shirley Hawkins with Mrs. Debbie Moody as co-hostess. Nine members and one guest were present. Mrs. Patricia Holton was welcomed as a visitor and potential member. Mrs. Dianne Dempsey gave the Inspiration which was a reminder of September and the expectation of Fall and the climate and how each season brings on new hope and inspiration. As is customary, it was a luncheon with an array of sumptuous dishes and desserts. As members served themselves from the spacious kitchen counter, they moved into the dining room. There the table was graced with a beautiful tablecloth which Mrs. Hawkins purchased from another country. It was white with beautiful embroidered red roses. The table was adorned with tall candle sticks and hurricane globes with candles. Also pretty chargers added to the setting.
After the meal, members gathered in the den for the meeting. Mrs. Dianne Luke, President, called the meeting to order. Mrs. Frances Ball, Secretary, called the roll and Mrs. Dale Shumaker gave the Treasurer’s report. Also, Dale brought the horticulture which was a mixed color of pintas. She grows these in her window boxes in her kitchen so that they can enjoy the numerous Hummingbirds feed. Mrs. Shirley Hawkins had her design which was a beautiful mix of red zinnias, princess feathers, sunflowers and solodego. The arrangement was made in a tall white vase.
President Luke then named all the committee Chairmen and explained the duty of each. New Projects include Adopt-A-Park, Arbor Day. Membership, Garden Education Center, Forestry Trails Christmas Tree at the Library, Flower Design at the Library, Horticulture, Horticulture-Plant Swap, Penny Pines Plantation Project and Way & Means.
President Luke then called on committee reports. Mrs. Marie Shaw reported in the Landscape Project at LSP in which plants were placed in front of and the rear of the Lodge. The plants are doing well in spite of the dry weather and hopefully the mulch will be put out in time for the “FALL MUSICAL FESTIVAL”, which will be September 28. Members were encouraged to attend and members had tickets for sale at $10.00 now and $15.00 at the gate. Mrs. Shaw also reported on the “FIRE WISE “grant which funded this project. Mrs. Frances Ball made the motion for the telephone committee to poll members for a vote on the potential member and the President will bring the decision to the next meeting.
The Southern Pines District Meeting will be held at the Briarwood Country Club in Meridian on October 3. Several ,members plan to attend. It was announced that the GCM Flower Shows will be held in each district rather than in a state wide show. Southern Pines will be in Meridian in March, 2020.
President Luke passed out the Yearbooks and explained each monthly meeting. Frances Ball gave out daffodil bulbs to members. Door prizes were won by Noniene Keen, Patricia Holton and Marie Shaw. The next meeting will be a tour of the MSU Landscape Department with Dr. Bob Bruzuszek as Instructor.
