WRITEON FOR APRIL 1, 2020
sister alies.
Are we April fools? Where did that come from you might ask! There’s no certainty but one could trace it back to the hitch in the Gregorian calendar switch…from April 1 to Jan 1 as the beginning of the new year…in any case it’s usually seen as a day for a hoax or a practical joke played upon one. The media worldwide has often played a big part. (perhaps this is where ‘fake news’ actually came from?)
In the Ukraine it is a holiday and the motto is “trust nobody”. A practical joke in Ireland is entrusting a letter to a person asking them to deliver it to someone else. When the letter is opened it says: ‘send the fool further’. One of the funniest I found concerned TACO BELL when it purchased a full-page advertisement saying they had purchased the Liberty Bell to help reduce the national debt.
In 1957 the BBC’s current affairs program PANORAMA showed a segment claiming that spaghetti grew on trees and actually showed folks harvesting the crop in the sun! In 1857, tickets were on sale all over London for the ‘washing of the lions’. This sent folks running to the Tower where the great stone lions are…there was no event! (PS: joking stops at noon in UK!)
Remember this? In 2009, a hoax appeared…or so folks thought that GUIDINGLIGHT, the soap was cancelled. No one believed it until it went off the air! Genuine news taken as a hoax.
I hope you can have enough levity to play a little joke on someone today, if only to let nothing steal your joy! Yes, we are faced with hoaxes and truth for real. We need to help one another and for those who are Christians, or find solace in Christian Scriptures…remember this:
“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean God no longer loves us if we have troubles or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold or in danger or threatened with death?...No…I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Death can’t. Life can’t. Angels can’t. Demons can’t. Our fears today, our worries about tomorrow, even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away…”(Rom8:35ff)
BLESSINGS.
