This year has been packed with excitement for the Maben Lions Club.
In January the speaker, Jeff Mann, told the members about some of his experiences as a past deputy officer for the Webster County Sheriff’s Department. He is a candidate for sheriff of Webster County. His talk was informative and interesting.
The program for February brought Rick Hamrick of the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks agency. He talked about the new regulations for turkey hunting in the state. A form must be completed when a turkey is harvested. Most all requirements can be completed online at the website, but paper forms are also available, and he left several with the Lions who were present.
He also talked about controlling an influx of black bear and panther coming into the state from the west. Wild hogs are present in various parts of the state and can do enormous damage to property, such as the problem Vicksburg is having in the Confederate Battlefield especially. He encouraged a visit to the Museum of Natural Science in Jackson, which is part of their agency’s responsibility.
Finally, we inducted the 23rd member of the Maben Lions Club on Feb. 26. First Vice District Gov. Mike Dowd of Louisville came to induct Pat White of Pheba into the club. He gave her the traditional charge to remember that “We Serve” is the motto of Lions. We should become aware of the needs of the community, the state and the country as well as being aware of global needs of the world community.
She was reminded that Lions all over the world are working on five focal things this year: problems associated with vision, hunger, environment, diabetes and childhood cancer.
As a Lion she will be expected to work with other Lions to relieve and overcome many of these problems through fundraisers and service projects like testing eyesight in schools and participating in food drives. Each Lions club in the world is expected to organize projects to help solve problems in each of these areas of concern.
Editor’s Note: Other candidates for Webster County sheriff are Bill Bland, David Gore, Casey Henderson, Calvin Robinson and Tim Tindall.
