The Louisville Fortnightly Club officially began its 2019-2020 club year on September 19 at Lake Tia O'Kata. Hostesses were Mrs. Stanley Hathorn, Mrs. Wayne Gordon, and Mrs. Tommy Boydstun. Fourteen members and one guest were present. The room was decorated beautifully with Mrs. Rebecca Gravett's plants as well as fresh flowers on the tables. Strawberry Trifle, Bacon/green onion finger sandwiches, and mixed nuts were served. Club booklets made by Mrs. Michael Counoyer were given to each member.
Mrs. Stanley Hathorn welcomed everyone and introduced Mrs. Gravett, Master Gardener, who gave a wonderful program on container gardening. Members enjoyed learning about epiphytes and caring for tillandsia. She also gave helpful hints on decorating with plants using wood. Gardening has been a lifelong hobby which Mrs. Gravett enjoyed even as a law student at NYU. At that point she used the fire escape at her apartments display 20-30 plants. Presently she tend to approximately 100 potted plants. What a fantastic program. She also generously gave each member a special plant, Grandfather's Pipe, to take home and enjoy.
Next, President Hathorn called the club into a business meeting. She read Psalm 100 as a devotional and then let the club in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Club Collect. Additionally, Mrs. Tommy Boydstun gave the roll call and the reading of the minutes. She also read correspondence letters the club received. Mrs. Wayne Gordon gave the Treasurer's report.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the table arrangements were given as door prizes. The club's next meeting will be October 17 at Lake Tia O'Kata in the VIP room at 1:30 p.m. Hostesses will be Mrs. Jimmy Burrage, Mrs. J.E. Calloway, and Mrs. Jerry Webb. Mrs. Melissa Foster will give the program.
