The member had intended to visit Petrified Forest in Flora for its October meeting, but it was too hot and there were not sufficient numbers of members who could attend. Dean Watkins, who was one of the hostesses responsible for arrangements for the visit was asked to give a history of the Petrified Forest. Dean said she was amazed that so many people in the Louisville Area had not visited this beautiful forest and she considered it one of the most interesting places to visit in Mississippi. There is a place for RV parking, a covered pavilion for picnics, a museum that has artifacts millions of years old, and a gift shop that has many beautiful items. The walk through the woods and seeing the petrified stone would delight any visitor and children seem to enjoy the museum. The Petrified Forest is open year round and members indicated a desire to reschedule a trip in the Spring.
President Chandler then gave a summary of her visit to the District Garden Club Meeting. She stated that we are members of the Garden Clubs of Mississippi and the National Garden Clubs.
Of special interest to President Chandler was scholarships which are available to juniors, seniors, and graduate students in horticulture or any environmental science area of study. There are also scholarships available for youth summer camp at Mississippi State University. All scholarship and award information is available on the MS Gardener website and in our booklet.
Clubs were asked to participate in at least one flower show during our club year. President Chandler also advised the MS Gardener Annual Convention will be in Starkville on April 27- 29, 2020.
Hostesses for the November 12 meeting are Kay Ward, Judy McLeod, and Martha Gammill. Kay Ward advised that the members would meet at the Winston County Hospital for a box lunch and would plant pansies in the planters outside the Cottages at the Winston County Nursing Home.
