“Gospel music allows us to become closer to God, and closer to each other.” — Marvin Sapp
Those words said by Mr. Sapp have been proven true many times, as people in Webster, Choctaw, Winston and Oktibbeha County can tell you.
Last year, the first William Golden Memorial Singing was held in August at Victory Baptist Church in Mathiston, with many people attending from many places in Mississippi and even from other states.
Plans are underway for the second, and hopefully to be annual, William Golden Memorial Singing on May 25 at the Eupora Community Center. It will begin at 10 a.m., break at noon for potluck lunch and return to singing at 1 p.m.
The event is to remember and honor one of Webster County’s late residents, William Golden. He was born here on Jan. 28, 1878, and was killed in a wreck in Webster County on May 13, 1934, at the age of 56.
Golden wrote such gospel songs as “Those Lonely Tombs” and “A Beautiful Life,” which has been recorded by many gospel groups.
At the memorial singing, anyone who will may direct songs until all present who will direct songs have done so. We will be expecting many people from different places in Mississippi and other states.
Reminders of the singing will be publicized as the May 25 date approaches.
