In April several members of the Maben Garden Club went to Twigs Nursery in Starkville to participate in a tour and program by the owner, Candice Brown.
She instructed the group about plants, fertilizer and container arrangements, especially containers that feature the "thriller, filler and spiller" plants that are so attractive.
Candice then took the group on a tour of the nursery and pointed out the choice of flowers she used in window boxes on her office building, and the rows and rows of plants of all varieties she and her husband have for sale.
The members were especially impressed with the beautiful large and small containers they have for sale. A "Sale" was available that included Black Gold fertilizer, which Candice highly recommended for garden use.
In May the group went to Tiak-O'Khata in Louisville for lunch and the installation of new officers. Sandra Bishop was asked to install the officers: Glenda Dobbs, president; Jane Collins, secretary; and Jeanette McMurry, treasurer. Not pictured in the accompanying photo of officers is the vice president, Julie Fulgham.
The Garden Club will be gearing up for the annual Birthday Calendar Sale to begin later this summer. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar please call 662-263-8458 and leave a message containing your contact information, and someone will be in touch with you about placing your order. If you are on our calendar list you will be contacted by a member to renew your order sometime before Sept. 1.
Funds raised from the calendar and advertisements sales are used by the club to maintain plantings at the town’s “Welcome” sign, the Maben Public Library, numerous plantings in large containers on Main Street and elsewhere in Maben, and plantings on corners at the corners along Highway 15 near downtown.
The club has also contributed to the purchase of promotional banners along Highway 15 and Webster Street.
