Webster County Career and Technology Center’s DECA District winners recently attended the State Career Development Conference in Jackson.
As a chapter, the 2018-19 DECA team earned the Thrive Level Chapter Campaign Award. Throughout the school year members have worked hard by participating in numerous activities including community service, school outreach and community outreach. WCCTC DECA is the only school chapter in Mississippi this year to achieve this top honor.
These members placed in their individual events: Lexy Lucas, second in Hotel and Lodging Management; Kaelin Turner, fourth in Food Marketing Series; Chloe Westmoreland, fourth in Personal Financial Literacy; Kelsey Green, fifth in Principles of Business Management; and Kami Fason, sixth in Retail Merchandising.
State event competitions each comprise a 100-question test and a role-play performed in front of judges. During the role-play, students are given a written scenario with 10-20 minutes to review and prepare a plan that translates what they have learned into effective, efficient and spontaneous action.
Competitors take on the role of an employee or manager and are given 10 minutes to present their role-plays to the judges, who serve in the role of a business owner or investor. Competitors are evaluated on key performance indicators and 21st century skills.
DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the world.
