This past Thursday afternoon the sophomores, juniors and seniors at Noxapater High School were allowed to attend a medical forum that was conducted by a number of professionals from Louisville Medical Clinic. The group was made up of Brooke Eaves, Clinic Administrator; Tracy Smith, LPN; Valerie Sullivan, FNP; Shelby Reeves, BSN, RN; Ashlee Bane Cravens, BSN, RN; Dinah Bryan, Medical Technologist, CRMC Lab Director; Renee Morgan, LPN, LMC Lab Manager; Mary Massey, Radiologic Technologist.
Eaves stated that as young people begin to look at a career and course of study after high school the medical field is wide open. For instance, phlebotomy is a 10-week course, along with clinical work and certification that could open the door for a student to move into a different field.
Eaves added that the purpose of the forum was to inform students of the different medical professions and opportunities that are available, as well as the educational requirements and salaries that one could expect.
The forum was the idea of Noxapater Attendance Center Principal, Chet Wilkes, who said “We really want to show them what is out there.” He added that this was not the first forum, as representatives from Nissan, Taylor Machine Works, MDOT and others had already visited the school.
Wilkes added, “We are trying to get them a wide scope of what’s out there after graduation, and hopefully it will resonate with some of them on what path they want to go.” Wilkes stated that more than just trying graduate students they are trying to prepare them for the future.
Each of the professionals from Louisville Medical Clinic had an opportunity to describe their jobs, the educational requirements and opportunities for advancement.
Wilkes added that there will be more forums to come.
