School is already back in session for the Winston Academy Patriots, and students were excited to find that not only had the school been made more secure, but that the cafeteria had been completely modernized. Headmaster Paul Hayles described these updates for the Journal recently.
Mr. Hayles described how the cafeteria, which was once a K-3 and Home Econonics classroom, had been completely renovated over the summer. A wall in the room was taken down to open up the area. New stainless steel tables were brought in, and the cooking area received many updates, including the redesigning of a structure wall. These and other changes - including updating remaining walls for easier cleaning – have made the cafeteria area “brand new.”
Another feature that students noticed immediately was the update of fencing around the school. Out front, the fencing is of wrought iron and a security gate is in the process of being installed as of press time. Behind the school, cyclone fencing has been erected. Hayles pointed out that these security upgrades were provided by the donations of school patrons.
Inside the halls of WA, security is increased with the installation of security video cameras in every classroom. Plus, a new intercom system has been installed across campus. “For the first time, everything can be heard everywhere (on campus),” said Hayles, reflecting on how the previous system needed replacement.
Hayles also mentioned that, in sports, WA is now competing in the correct classification – 4A – in the MAIS (Mississippi Association of Independent Schools). Previously, sports teams at WA might have to compete with a 5A school, for example, and this year, that has been rectified so that each team has an equal opportunity.
Finally, the headmaster shared that there were at least four new teachers (or new to their grade) for the 2023-2024 school year. These individuals include: Marianne Beals (7th-9th English), Braxton Hayles (Math and math labs), Bridget Kelly (K4 lead teacher) and Megan Hemphill (K3 Assistant).
Hayles is excited about the new school year and the new opportunities it brings. The Patriots are already participating in volleyball and softball. Meet the Patriots was scheduled for Thursday, August 10, with the annual prayer walk to follow.
