Just a few weeks ago, The Journal featured the new principals at Noxapater, Nanih Waiya, Fair and Louisville Elementary. Readers might be surprised to learn that staff changes required new assistant principals at those same schools. Each new assistant principal is very excited to be at their new schools and new positions, and they are looking forward to an exciting school year.
Maggie Kemper is the new assistant principal at Noxapater Attendance Center. She is no stranger to Louisville Public Schools; she was a teacher within the district before her latest position. Kemper is a Starkville native and a graduate of Mississippi State University. She has a Masters in Educational Leadership from Mississippi College. She enthusiastically looks forward to her first year as a Tiger.
Joseph Vowell is the new assistant principal at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center. He says he is both “honored and excited” to be in the position. Vowell and his wife, Amanda, have three children. He says that his children inspire his educational endeavors with their “curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm inspire me more every day and remind me of the importance of creating a supportive and enriching environment for all students.”
Vowell is a Weir native, and he possesses a Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Mississippi. He has a Master of Education degree from Liberty University. Vowell credits the programs with giving him “the skills and knowledge to effectively guide and support both students and educators.”
Vowell brings another bit of leadership expertise to NWHS. Between 2004 and 2009 (while attending college), he worked for Taylor Machine Works. He would begin his educational career at Weir Attendance Center in 2009. This combination of work experience provides him with the ability to help students flourish no matter what career path they take. He would begin teaching and coaching with Choctaw County in 2013 when the schools in the area consolidated. He remained there until this spring, when he was offered the position at NWHS.
Vowell told the Journal: “As the Assistant Principal at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center, m goal is to continue its tradition of excellence. Being a first-year administrator, I bring a fresh perspective and genuine excitement to collaborate with the dedicated educators, staff, parents, and students at NWHS.” He added that he is committed to cultivating a supportive atmosphere in his new role.
Kandi Shorter is not new to Louisville Municipal Schools, even though she is the new assistant principal at Fair Elementary. Shorter is married to LHS’ Head Football Coach, Tyrone Shorter. She’s worked with the seniors as a sponsor, and she has done a great deal to support the LHS athletics program. At LHS, she taught Government/Economics for twelve years. The Shorters have two children: Corey and Jazz.
Shorter’s educational resume includes two Master degrees – one in Special Education and one in School Administration. She also possesses an Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership. Each of her degrees were earned at Mississippi State University.
Louisville Elementary has a new assistant principal in Ms. Tareva Hill-Jenkins. Ms. Hill-Jenkins has a lengthy educational resume’, and when she’s not working with students, she is following her children in their own activities. She describes herself as a “sports and band mom.”
Tareva earned a Bachelor degree in English from Alcorn University. She would earn a Master of Education degree in Leadership and Administration from Concordia University. Ms. Hill-Jenkins also earned an Educational Specialist degree from Delta State University. She hails from the Shuqualak area, but she happily calls Louisville home now. She has been a part of the LMSD school system since 2018.
Altogether, Ms. Hill-Jenkins has fourteen years of experience. She has worked at Kemper County schools as well as with the Harrison County School District. She has worked as an English teacher, a student council sponsor, and a National English Honor Society advisor. She has also served on numerous committees while at LHS and co-sponsored a number of student organizations.
