HATTIESBURG — One of Mississippi’s proudest communities got a little prouder on Friday.
Nanih Waiya claimed the school’s first-ever state championship in football on Friday as the Warriors beat Hollandale Simmons 21-18 at M.M. Roberts Stadium on the campus of Southern Mississippi.

After losing in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year, the Tigers are officially suffering from the Nanih Waiya hangover.
The Tigers struggled on both sides of the football on Friday night as they lost 26-0 to East Marion.

Nanih Waiya kicked off the basketball season with a short trip to Dekalb and came back with two wins over Kemper Academy.
The Lady Warriors took a hard-fought 32-24 win while the Warriors had little trouble and took a 67-32 win in the boys contest.

Second-half explosion powers Warriors past Resurrection

Despite leading 20-0 at the half, Nanih Waiya coach James Courtney felt like his team was trailing.
The Warriors responded at the half by scoring on their first four possessions of the half and beat visiting Resurrection Catholic 48-0 on Friday night in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.
