The Choctaw County Supervisors have come to the portion of the year that all supervising boards get to – the lull between one fiscal year and the other – while they await new funding, mull the upcoming budget year, while keeping a watchful eye on the current budget.
After crunching numbers and clearing up a small clerical issue in District 2, the board approved Phillips Construction of Columbus and RJM McQueen of Collins to do work in the county. The two companies will split the project, which is in two parts. Part A of the project will be soil and cement and Part B will be for chip and seal
Phillips was approved for $421,000 and RJM McQueen was approved for $828,000. County Engineer Marty Crowder said he may have underestimated the original estimate, which both came in under Crowder’s estimates.
“It’s hard to estimate with the cost of stuff,”
The work will be completed on Stewart Extension and South Union Road in District 1; Reed Road and Bluff Springs Road in District 2; Mount Salem Road, Patterson-Taylor Road, Shady Grove Road, Old Highway 12, Erwin Road, Talley Road and West Wilson Road in District 3; Penderville Road, Stevenson-Kerr Road and Maness Road in District 4; McKnight Road, Bellwood Road, McClure Road, Bruce Road and Enon Road in District 5.
Also, the board recessed their meeting until today at 2 p.m. when they will open bids for the Fentress-Panhandle Road bridge, which has been closed for four years – although it may feel to those in the area it’s been closed for five.
Once bids are approved, the $1.9 million project is scheduled to be completed in 180 days and should be completed before the end of summer.
One of the county’s major connectors, the road connects the Spay-Panhandle area of the county and those who commute from Winston and Attala Counties to Highway 12 in Fentress.
