5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
— Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)
Most professed followers of Jesus Christ claim to put their trust in God, but do they really? When it comes down to it, do you fully trust God, or do you prefer to rely upon your own instincts, knowledge, or perceptions of reality?
That’s a tough question, but a fair one.
The Word of God is clear that our full level of trust must be in God and God alone. When we decide to “help” God by using our fleshly logic and understanding of circumstances, we often wind up “going our own way” instead of His.
Relying upon the direction of the Holy Spirit is crucial when it comes to making timely, correct, God-honoring decisions in all aspects of our lives. That is why a personal relationship with God is so important. Without habitually leaning upon God in all situations, we will gradually begin to follow our own ideas, instead of His wisdom.
It usually doesn’t begin as an intentional rebellion againstGod, or a flagrant distrust of Him. But, that’s exactly the path we will find ourselves walking unless we completely trust in God and depend on his perfect understanding, not our perceptions of what we see and feel.
When we seek his will, not ours, in every aspect of our lives, God will not fail to lead us in the proper direction. It is not our eyesight, or even our heart, that keeps us on the path God prefers for us. It’s our willingness to seek His voice and to trust what He says.
