Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women. Risk of breast cancer is higher for women with a personal or family history of the disease. However, 80 percent of the women who develop breast cancer have no family history. Paired with breast self-exam and physical exams, regular mammograms are still the front line of defense in the fight against breast cancer.
Good breast health is important for all women. Women ages 20-39 should perform breast self-examinations monthly and have a doctor perform a clinical breast exam every three years. Women 40 and older should perform a breast self-examination every month, have a clinical breast examination by a doctor every year and get a yearly mammogram. Mammograms may be recommended earlier and/or more often for women who are at a higher risk.
Here are a few tips that women need to know before their mammogram:
*If you have sensitive breast, you should schedule your mammogram at the end of your menstrual cycle.
*Do not wear deodorant, powder or cream under your arms or on your breast. These products may interfere with the quality of the mammogram.
*Bring a list of dates and locations and/or a copy of your previous mammogram images with you to your appointment.
Digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it directly into NMMC’s computerized Picture Archiving and Communication System. Radiologists can enhance, magnify or manipulate these digital images, making it easier to detect abnormalities.
For a mammogram appointment, contact your health care provider for a referral. For more information about digital mammography or any of NMMC-Eupora’s radiology services, call (662) 258-6221 or 1-800-THE DESK (1-800-843-3375).
