WRITEON FOR JUNE 29, 20922
The women athletes of my generation were not afforded what my niece on a volleyball scholarship to college received. No, it took Title IX to make that happen and look what wonderful things have transpired for women and girls! We celebrated its great day along with International Tennis Day as Wimbledon gets underway. Of course, at this writing ‘Ole Miss’ is in the MCWorld Series final! By the time this goes to print, however, you will know the outcome. Sports are places of safety and challenge for so many. The Special Olympics USA Games were brilliant, and we see for many young people a maturing and thoughtfulness, even a humility, formed around teamwork, winning/losing, and enjoying a sport even if not a g.o.a.t. (that is, greatest of all time)!
The overturning of Roe will bring much happiness to many and sadness to others. The Jan. 6 hearings continue to reveal plots and deeper plots that have set our nation on a collision course with the ‘truth’ of lying authoritarians who care only for power. Though I agree with the opposition that maybe the safety concerns of the police, or the job of the Speaker, and the like might indeed be investigated…not one of those complaints would have dissolved the government! They might be reprimanded so that nothing like that happens again…but those were flashes in the pan to what is being revealed as illegal, immoral and or downright wrong! However, it’s not done yet so in July we’ll reflect a bit more.
Did our Bro. Danny Irvin win? What a hoot…a songwriter in our midst. Loved the article in last week’s CPD about him and his varied career! Love the guy! ‘This Wrinkled Hand in Mine’ there are lots of those around here…glad he touched that chord!
Also, a shout-out to Donna McKay. Thank you for great service and hope that all your ‘retirement’ is a joy!
Michael Tolle is a good read and in his book of reflections, Like A Tree, he reminds us of this:
“You can learn a lot from failure but I wouldn’t recommend it…there is no reason why any mistake should ever be made more than once…there is a better way to lean from your mistakes; learn from other people’s mistakes…” He says: “Someone should host an Academy Awards-type event that recognized the LOSER of the year; could be a public forum for getting the word out, a sort of ‘whatever you do, don’t do this’.” There are lots of those things around and as I grow in patience and learn to be attentive to what is around me, what I take in and how I form my ideas, I thank him for that insight. Perhaps we have learned something new between Juneteenth and the 4th of July about how we govern and respect others?
BLESSINGS.
