In the movie trailer Skyscraper Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character says, "My family is the only thing that matters to me."
In the movie, Johnson risks his own life and kills a host of individuals just to save his family. Johnson's character is the hero in the plot and those who have separated him from his family are the villains.
Movies, literature, and even Biblical stories (i.e. Mary, Mother of Jesus fled to Egypt) illustrate to us the importance of family and what a parent would do to protect or be reunited with their child.
Every parent I know would burn down half the world, if it would save their child from danger. I know I would and I also know without a doubt, that my spitfire wife would burn down the entire world to protect our children. Sacrificing for your offspring is ingrained into most person’s DNA.
In our society we have given individuals who wish to relocate to another country the title of immigrant. In the United States that title is often derogatory. Our President must also think that immigrants are less than human because he believes that separating children from their parents is a "good bargaining tool." When you take a child and use them as a bargaining tool it is called kidnapping.
These "immigrants" are truly parents just like us or better yet, they are human beings just like us. They have been dealt a bad hand in life and are trying to escape countries where violence is an everyday occurrence. These people want to give their children something more than poverty, violence, and most often death. So they come to the United States, the land of the free seeking the American dream. And what they find is the land of locking of children. Their children are taken from them and placed behind fences with armed guards, while the parents sit in jail cells and are separated from their family and wait for who knows how long.
The United States is made up of immigrants and I am ashamed that our leaders are standing by allowing these families to be separated. The policy is wrong, and every person who helps enforce or ignores what our government officials are doing bears responsibility for these despicable acts.
I ask you to do the right thing. Tell your neighbor, contact your Senator, call your representative, the President - tell everyone you know how immoral this is.
This is the letter I sent to our congressmen and woman:
I rarely contact anyone in the congregational delegation, but this is one of the times in my life, when I feel that I have to say something directly and not just on the editorial page of my newspapers. The separation of children from their parents at the border must stop. This is a form of evil being perpetrated in every American’s name by our government. May you oppose this vocally and have some influence to end this.
