The Ole Miss Lady Rebels are the only team from our state that will be heading to March Madness. It is the fifth consecutive year for the Lady Rebels and 22nd overall appearance in program history. Ole Miss (23-11) will begin their tournament play Friday night facing Gonzaga in Minneapolis. The Rebels are the fifth seed in the Sacramento Region.
The Rebels of Ole Miss (15-20) lost 12 of their final 13 regular season games before coming alive in the SEC tournament last week. The Rebels, seeded 15th, won three straight games as they defeated Texas, Georgia and Alabama before falling to tournament champion Arkansas, 93-90, in the semifinals.
Mississippi State (13-19) lost to Auburn in their only game in the SEC tournament.
The SEC men's and women’s teams each had ten teams selected for this year's NCAA Tournaments.
The William Carey Lady Crusaders' (24-6) season ended with a 74-72 loss to Shawnee State (Ohio) in the NAIA tournament opening round.
William Carey lost to Cumberland in second round action of the NAIA National Tournament. William Carey edged Xavier in opening round action. The Crusaders (28-5) tied a school record for wins in a season.
The Jones College Bobcats won their third straight Region 23 NJCAA championship with a 102-96 overtime victory over regular season champ Itawamba last Thursday in Fulton. The Bobcats secured the automatic bid with the win and will travel to Hutchinson, Kansas for the Division 1 NJCAA National Tournament beginning March 21.
The Northwest Lady Rangers edged regular season champion Pearl River, 60-55, to claim the Region 23 title. The Lady Rangers will head to the National Tournament that begins March 24 in Lake Charles.
The Mississippi boys blasted the Alabama All-Stars, 98-79, in the annual MS/AL Basketball Classic held at Mississippi College over the weekend. Blake Nettles of Pascagoula led the winners with 16 points and eight rebounds. The Alabama ladies won, 93-65, extending their win streak to nine games. Jada Gray of Starkville and Kayliss Walker of Laurel led the Mississippi team with 18 points each.
Baseball
Southern Miss started the week with a thrilling 2-1 ninth inning win over Ole Miss. The Golden Eagles (16-4, 1-2) opened Sun Belt play at Arkansas State and could muster only one win. Southern Miss will host Troy this weekend.
Ole Miss went 1-3 on their four-game road trip. The Rebels (16-5, 1-2) could manage only one win at Texas over the weekend. Ole Miss will host Kentucky in a three-game series beginning Thursday.
Mississippi State (16-4, 1-2) split four games last week. The Bulldogs staged a comeback win over Tulane but lost twice at Arkansas. The Bulldogs will entertain Vandy beginning Friday.
Belhaven (14-2) finally lost as they fell to Fayetteville (NC.) halting their season opening 12-game winning streak.
College Football
The Southern Miss football schedule was finalized last Friday as the Sun Belt master schedule was released. Southern Miss' schedule is highlighted by two College Football Playoff teams in James Madison and Tulane in addition to Auburn of the SEC. The Golden Eagles, under first-year coach Blake Anderson, will open the season by hosting Alcorn (Sept. 5).
The Golden Eagles will host Alcorn, UConn, Louisiana, Arkansas State, James Madison and South Alabama. They will travel to Auburn, Tulane, Troy, La. Monroe, La. Tech and Old Dominion.
FanDuel is out with their over-and-under win totals for the 2026 team. Texas Tech and Notre Dame led the way with an 11.5-win total. The Southeastern Conference will be playing nine conference games and the highest totals within the SEC were Georgia and Texas with 9.5 wins. Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M were next at 8.5-win totals while Oklahoma and Ole Miss (with Trinidad) came in at 7.5. Auburn, Florida, Missouri, Tennessee and Vandy totals were 6.5. Kentucky and South Carolina were next at 5.5 while Arkansas and Mississippi State came in at 4.5.
