Funeral services for Charles Edward Bates, 71, were held at 11 a.m., January 17 at St. James Church Cemetery. Rev. Andre Hickman officiated.
Mr. Bates died January 2 in Davenport, Iowa.
Survivors include 1 daughter, Arnetia Bates; 2 sons, Corey Bates and Roy Lee Bates; 1 sister, Charlene Bates; 2 brothers, Steven Bates and Robert Bates; 6 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Hattie Dell Pleas
Funeral services for Hattie Dell Pleas, 90, were held at 1 p.m., January 14 at Beck Funeral Home in Louisville. Dr. B.M. Pittman officiated. Burial followed in the Louisville Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Pleas died January 6 at the Winston Medical Center in Louisville.
Survivors include one son, James Pledge, and Chris White, raised as a son; grandchildren, Kanisha Jones and LaQuonda Kirkwood; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Houston Burnside
Funeral services for Houston Burnside, 82, were held at 2 p.m., January 15 at Beck Funeral Home in Louisville. Dr. Benjamin Pittman officiated. Burial followed in the Louisville Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Burnside died January 7 at the Oktibbeha County Hospital.
Survivors include 2 daughters, Karen and Tiffany; one son, Terrance; one brother, W.R. Brown, Jr.; 2 sisters, Helen Fleming and Kandace Hinton; 2 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Eugene Jernigan
Funeral services for Eugene Jernigan, 74, were held at 1 p.m., January 17 at Mount Bell M.B. Church. Dr. Anthony McIntosh officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jernigan died January 10 in Cook County, Illinois.
Survivors include his wife, Earlene Jernigan; 2 sons, Eric and Dack Jernigan; 1 stepson, Daras Jackson; 2 brothers, Oliver Dean Jernigan and Charles Jernigan; 10 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Murphy Lee Miller
Funeral services for Murphy Lee Miller, 70, were held at 2 p.m., January 16 at the Louisville Memorial Cemetery. Rev. Anthony Thames officiated.
Mr. Miller died January 11 at the Starkville Manor.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Murphy; 4 sons, Tyrone Smith, Clifton Smith, Kendrick Miller, and Randy Miller; 1 sister, Edith Dotson; 8 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Carol Faye Pruitt
Carol Faye Pruitt, 67, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021, at the Elderly Care Center in Macon, Mississippi. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday, January 7 in the Nowell-Massey Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Tim Horton officiating. Visitation was the day of the service from 1 p.m. until service time at Nowell-Massey Funeral Home. Interment followed the service in Mashulaville Cemetery in Mashulaville, Mississippi.
Carol Faye was born August 19, 1953, to Clarence Odell and Myrtice Syrine Higginbotham in Noxubee County. She attended Westside Baptist Church until its closure. Carol Faye was a nurse for many years at Noxubee General Hospital and later was the owner of the Elderly Care Center in Macon.
Carol Faye is survived by two sons, Charles Higginbotham and Joseph Pruitt, both of Macon; and 5 grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers Larry Higginbotham of Macon and Raymond Higginbotham of Waskom, Texas; and two nephews and their children, all of Waskom. She also leaves behind nieces, nephews, and friends.
Serving as pallbearers were Charles Higginbotham, Joseph Pruitt, Preston Higginbotham, Luke Pruitt, Taft Baker, and Jacob Gilbert. Memorials in honor of Carol Faye may be given to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org.

He was born Oct. 30, 1934. Mr. Herd died Jan. 7, 2021, in Eupora.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Herd of Maben; two sons, Robert Herd of Maben and Darren Herd of Batesville; a daughter, Sonja Chambers of Memphis, Tenn.; four sisters, Catherine Cooper of Saginaw, Mich., Helen Cooper of Starkville, Ola Mae Bowdry of Grenada and Josephine Kincaide of Maben; five brothers, Willie James Herd and Jimmie Heard of Saginaw, Eddie Rufus Heard of Rockford, Ill., John Heard of Maben and Tommie Heard of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Michael “Shay” Curry Marshall, 52, of Kearney, Mo., formerly of Eupora, were Jan. 16, 2021, at Spring Valley Cemetery in Mathiston with the Rev. Andrew Windrick officiating.
He was born Jan. 29, 1968, to the late Andrew Curry Marshall Jr. and Louise Marshall Ford. Mr. Marshall attended Eupora High School and was a member of Mt. Union Missionary Baptist Church. He died Jan. 3, 2021.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Coe Marshall of Kearney; two daughters, Myesha Shunte Marshall of Kansas City, Mo., and Mikayla Stillwell of St. Louis; a son, William Joseph of Kansas City; two brothers, Reginald McKinney of Eupora and William Ford of Winona; five sisters, Sandra Kay Head, Leslie Marshall Willis, Margie Louise Brown and Clara Tippett, all of Eupora, and Zelma Marshall of Starkville; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

She was born Feb. 23, 1932, in Webster County.
Mrs. Thaggard died Jan. 5, 2021, at Pontotoc Extended Care. Survivors include her children, Worth Thaggard and Hope Thaggard Fair of Readyville, Tenn., and Cynthia Thaggard Easley of Pontotoc; six grandchildren; and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.
