As many municipalities are gearing up for primary elections, the campaign is in full bloom in Choctaw County – like the springtime. In June voters in the towns of Ackerman and Weir, will go to the polls to elect who they want to represent them for the next four years. In the Town of Ackerman race, Incumbent Mayor Dale Reid will face off against Lauren Carson and Randy Craft in the mayoral election.
In the at-large alderman race, incumbent Carl Phelps is being challenged by Nora “Lynn” Cain, and in the Ward 3 race, incumbent Chris Robinson is being challenged by Bobby Davis.
Ward 1 Alderwoman Felecia Miller Baber and Ward 4 Alderman Brent Telano have no challengers and will retain their seat.
After the passing of Alderman Tommy Curtis, the Town of Ackerman board appointed his wife, Debby Curtis to serve his unexpired term.
City Clerk Debbie Boley said once Curtis serves out her husband’s term, then the board will set a special election for Curtis’s seat after the new board and mayor are sworn in at the July 1 meeting.
In the Town of Weir, Andrea Meadows and Andy Bunkleman are running to become the next mayor of Weir. Interim mayor Doug Atkinson is serving in the position after the death of longtime mayor Glen Beard, Sr.
Atkinson and Weir’s other long serving alderman Steve Wright have decided not to run in the upcoming election.
Returning to the board will be Javette Pratt and Vicky Carter who are both running unopposed, joining them will be Stoney Armstrong, John O’Kelly, and Lloyd Ray who qualified to run. All of Weir aldermen are running unopposed.
In French Camp, Glen Barlow is running unopposed and will retain his mayoral seat. French Camp will also have two new alderwomen joining. Maria Price and Mitzi Watkins will join Bo Kirby, Jan Henderson and Bo Henderson. Price and Watkins will replace Becky …. and Jennifer Morgan.
