Winston Academy’s girls earned one win and a fourth-place finish in last week’s East Webster Christmas Classic Tournament, while the WA boys had a solid showing in their final game after falling to a pair of larger public schools earlier in the week.
The Lady Patriots opened the tournament with a 44-30 win over Hebron Christian School last Thursday before dropping a 41-25 decision to eventual tournament champion Choctaw County in the semifinals on Friday.
Saturday, Winston’s girls gave Class 2A power and host East Webster a scare before falling 44-38, dropping to 8-11 on the season.
Winston’s boys fell to Class 4A Louisville and Class 3A Choctaw County to open the eight-team, three-game guarantee tournament. On Saturday, they stormed back from a big deficit before falling 65-61 to Oak Hill Academy. The Pats have dropped eight in a row and are now 7-13.
Both of Winston’s teams are scheduled to host Starkville Academy on Friday this week, and Saturday the Patriots will face Hatley in the Houston Shootout.
Next week, both squads will host Leake Academy on Tuesday (Jan. 9), go to Heritage Academy on Thursday (Jan. 11) and return to East Webster on Saturday (Jan. 13).
Winston’s girls used a balanced attack to knock off Hebron Christian School in their EWCC tourney opener last week. Lilly Sisson pumped in 14 points, Bailey Wood and Madelyn Bright scored 11 points apiece and Sarah Catt chipped in eight points.
In the semifinals on Friday, the Lady Patriots dropped a 41-25 decision to Class 3A Choctaw County, which went on to win the tournament by defeating Starkville Academy.
Sisson scored 10 points in the loss to the Lady Chargers, while Bright scored seven and Wood six.
In the third-place consolation game, the Lady Patriots fell to host East Webster 44-38 and finished fourth.
Wood scored 11 points to lead Winston, Sisson scored nine, Hallie Nowell had eight and Bright chipped in five.
Winston’s boys fell 97-48 to Louisville in their tournament-opener, getting 17 points from Collin Mills in the loss.
After falling to Choctaw County in a consolation-bracket game Friday, the Patriots dropped a 65-61 decision to Oak Hill Saturday in the seventh-place game.
Winston trailed by 14 at halftime and by 17 going into the fourth quarter. A flurry of 3-pointers from Mills and Hoyt Hendrix pulled the Patriots within 62-59 before Oak Hill secured the win with free throws.
