Aspiring candidates for the 2019 county elections received valuable information regarding the upcoming election during the Winston County Journal Political Party on Jan. 31 at Lake Tiak O’Khata.
The event featured speaker, Jason Camp, an instructor with the Mississippi State Extension Center for Government and Community Development and Hanna McCain, a political science graduate and former Winston County Journal advertising consultant.
“Sometimes candidates are not completely up to speed with some mandatory responsibilities they assume once they qualify for office,” Camp said. “Everyone who runs is required to file campaign finance reports and statements of economic interest for public view. Our new site provides information on how and when to file these reports.” Camp encouraged those who are running for office to educate themselves on the laws of running a campaign.
“We are proud to partner with the Office of the Secretary of State to provide videos that help explain the qualification process to potential candidates and voters,” Camp said.
Along with Camp, Hanna McCain gave the group some very valuable tips of running a political campaign. “Having the support of your family is extremely important to running a successful campaign. If you are going to run for office, you must have the mindset that you are running to win- not to just get your name out in the public.”
Joseph McCain, Publisher of the Winston County Journal, explained to the candidates about the importance of advertising in the local newspaper. Candidates were given advertising packets to help them in planning their newspaper advertisements. “We are here to help you run a successful campaign.” Stated McCain.
The deadline to run for the 2019 County Elections is Friday, March 1.
