Winston County’s unemployment rate was almost 1 percentage point above the May rate for the state.
The county’s jobless rate was 5.9 percent in May and the state rate was 5.1 percent for May.
Winston unemployment is up slightly compared to 2017 when the rate was 5.3 percent in May 2017.
Mississippi Department of Employment Security 5 year statistics show the county’s unemployment rate in 2013 for May reached 11.4 percent.
The state’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in May while the national average was 3.6 percent, also unadjusted.
In May 2018, the Civilian Labor Force, which consists of everyone who has a job or is looking for a job, increased 2,900 over the month to 1,278,200. Th e number of employed Mississippians rose over the month by 1,600 to 1,218,700.
More Mississippians were employed than at any time since July 2008. The number of unemployed Winston Countians in May was 430.
According to the seasonally adjusted results from a survey of Mississippi employers, there were 300 fewer nonfarm jobs in May 2018. Over the year the number of nonfarm jobs has increased 15,900.
Th e May 2018 job fi gure is the third highest number of jobs ever recorded in Mississippi.
For the month of May 2018, twenty-seven counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than the state’s rate of 5.1 percent.
Rankin County posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month at 3.7 percent while Jefferson had the highest at 12.8 percent followed by Holmes County at 9.8 percent.
