If you had been driving by Eupora First Baptist Church the night of June 21 or happened to be driving by the Eupora Community Center on June 22, you might have thought there was a wedding, as so many people came to Eupora on those two dates.
Friday night, June 21, after a week of Singing School at Eupora First Baptist, a concert was held in the beautiful sanctuary of the church.
At this concert, the students who had attended the school performed, as did many others who came.
This singing school was led by Marty Phillips; wife, Ann; and son, Madison; from Crossett, Ark.
This school had many people of all ages and even had a large attendance of beginners, who were fast learners.
The beginners loved practicing and singing a song written by Wayne Breakfield from Purvis, “Do You Wonder ‘bout the Dinosaur?”
When this Beginners’ Class sang this song, when they got to the words in the second verse, “Have you ever seen a dinosaur know how big he was or heard one roar,” you probably could have heard those beginners roar from outside the church.
Also, at this concert, we were treated to special singing by four generations of Blantons from Ackerman, those being Roy Blanton, his son, Alton, and a grandson and a great-grandson.
This did not stop there, as the very next day at the Eupora Community Center the Webster County Singing Convention was held with the help of Lisa Dodd Threet, her sister Lara and other family members.
At this county convention, many people from Mississippi and other states came, and had only one problem, but, was a happy problem.
There was such a good attendance that, at the lunch hour, al the tables and chairs had to be moved, but after lunch, they were moved back and the singing continued.
The Webster County Singing Convention had no shortage of pianists, as seven or more must have came.
Several people were present at the convention who had served as president of their state singing convention, as well as some who had been president of the national conventions.
Also, we were happy to see M’Kayla Duncan from Mount Olive and Carl Gregory from Pontotoc, who will be president and vice president of the Mississippi State Singing Convention on Aug. 16-17 at Arbor Grove Baptist Church in Newton, and we know some people around here will be attending that.
We understand both events will be back in Eupora next year and look forward to it. All who came expressed thanks to Eupora First Baptist and the Eupora Community Center for their welcoming and opening their doors for these events.
