Bronson Strickland, Mississippi State University Extension wildlife specialist, spoke on chronic wasting disease in deer at the May 29 meeting of the Eupora Rotary Club.
On Feb. 9, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks reported that a 4-year-old white-tailed deer buck in Issaquena County had tested positive for CWD, which is a contagious, fatal, neurological disease that affects deer.
Results from subsequent CWD sampling in a 5-mile containment zone were returned March 5 indicating all samples were “not detected for CWD.” MDWFP said sampling will continue in an effort to determine the extent and prevalence of the disease.
Strickland is the St. John Family Endowed Professor of Wildlife Management in the College of Forest Resources at MSU. He also holds a research appointment in the MSU Forest and Wildlife Research Center. Strickland co-directs the Deer Ecology and Management Laboratory at Mississippi State, one of the premier deer management research units in the country.
