As the sun rested westward and the traffic slowed along state highway nine, members of the Pilgrim Rest M. B. Church assembled for a fire safety workshop. With the clock’s hands tilted towards 6pm participants settled into the chairs for a timely start.
This informational workshop opened with prayer from Deacon Jerry Evans and Sister Virginia Thomas extended a welcome of gratitude. “The Winston County Self Help Cooperative based in Louisville, MS, sponsored several fire safety workshops across the state to educate families and to help save lives according to Linden Ball, WCSHC member.
Ball stated, Mississippi continues to lead the nation in home fire fatalities. In the month of February 2019 Washington and Hinds Counties suffered three fire fatalities.” These unfortunate situations prompted Jessie Evans to organize a fire safety workshop at Pilgrim Rest M. B. Church in Ackerman, MS. Jessie said, “we need to equip families and communities with knowledge to reduce fire fatalities. Therefore, we requested assistance from Bywy Fire Department personnel to educate our members.” Blaine Adams provided participants with relevant knowledge to help save lives.
Blaine emphasized the need for families to develop a fire escape plan. The family household should implement their plan with a bi-monthly fire drill.
Additionally, you can reduce your insurance premium by adding an alarm system. Blaine said “most fires starts in the kitchen due to unattended consequences of not watching your pots in the process of cooking. Please exercise extreme care when using stoves or heaters.”
Sister Virginia Thomas delivered closing comments by thanking everyone for participating in the fire safety workshop. “We hope you learned some pertinent information to help save lives and reduce fire fatalities.” Jessie Evans workshop organizer said, “we convey thanks to the Winston County Self Help Cooperative for sponsoring this educational workshop.” Visit wcshc.com
