MABEN — On any day, people can drive around our towns in the area and may see litter on the sides of the highways and roads.
Even worse is the litter that is thrown in yards of the people who live on the highways and roads.
These yards are around the homes of many people, and of course are on the rights-of-way that the people mow.
You will see anything from cigarette butts and empty packs, candy bar wrappers, potato chip bags and even dirty baby diapers thrown out of cars.
What about littering laws? We do have laws against littering and even with fines to be charged.
But, on Jan. 16, 2018, some members of the Mississippi House of Representatives said they were tired of seeing trash on the side of highways.
They passed a law to allow an increase in the fine for littering. Anyone caught could be charged no less than $500, which would be used for local litter prevention programs.
On a second offense of littering , with this law, a person’s fine could be doubled, and even have the person help pick up trash on the highways.
But, why do we as citizens not report the people who are littering to the police? Many times, a person will not report the people littering for fear that the people littering might learn who reported them.
Until people living in the communities begin caring, it looks as if there will continue to be a problem of littering, which is seen by people driving through these communities
