75 Years Ago – December 22, 1944
FRONT PAGE: News has been received that Clyde Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hill, Rt. 6, was killed in action November 29 while serving with the Infantry of the 3rd Army. He joined the service in the summer of 1944 and had been overseas for three weeks. He leaves a wife and two small children. - Sgt. Clyde Hamill, Jr., 21, was recently killed in France while serving in Patton’s 3rd Army, according to the message received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hamill, Sr., who moved to Kansas City, Mo. about two years ago. Sgt. Hamill had been in the army about two years, sailing to the European theatre in June. He had visited his aunt, Mrs. Harrison Kinard, about six months ago.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held for Mrs. Ella Watson McMillin, 72, at the Presbyterian Church USA Dec. 17th, with her pastor Rev. C. P. Thrailkill in charge of the service, with interment in Masonic cemetery. She passed away at the family home on Friday, December 15th, having been seriously ill for about 10 days after suffering a stroke Dec. 6th. Mrs. McMillin was born Jan. 3rd, 1872, to Major Oliver Clark Watson and wife Rosanna Virginia Patty Watson, both from pioneer families of the county. As a girl, she attended M. S. C. W. and I. I. & C. and had taught school for many years. On Jan. 10, 1906, she was married to Albert L. McMillian. “Miss Ella” led a live of usefulness and unselfishness. Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, two sons, two sisters, three brothers. - J. N. Innabnit, 74, died at his home December 16, with burial at Perkinsville Cemetery Monday afternoon, with Rev. W. C. Kitchens officiating. Mr. Innabnit had been sick the past two years. The deceased is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. - Funeral services for Mrs. Jennie Talbert, 75, were conducted at Rocky Hill Methodist Church Dec. 19th, with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Talbert died Dec. 18th at the home of Mrs. Herbert Caperton, after a week’s illness from toxic poison resulting in heart trouble. She was born in Kemper County April 23, 1869. In 1885 she married C. D. Talbert. She is survived by five daughters, four sons, 34 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. - Services were held for Miss Mary Livingston, 84, at Betheden Lutheran church Dec. 20th, with interment in the church cemetery. Miss Livingston died suddenly at her home in Betheden from the infirmities of old age. She was born in South Carolina Oct. 20, 1860, and was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by one brother, Jack, and several nieces and nephews. - Funeral services will be held today for Mrs. Cornelia Estelle Whitehead, at Goodhope Baptist Church. She had been in ill health for several years and died from pneumonia Dec. 20 at the home of her son, John C. Whitehead. Her husband died in 1920. Mrs. Whitehead, who was born in 1859, is survived by five daughters, three sons, and a great number of grandchildren.
