100 Years Ago – October 24, 1919
The “unknown hero” of the historic grave in Allatoona Pass near Acworth, has after these many years been identified. This Confederate soldier who lost his life and whose headstone reads “Unknown Hero: He Lost his Life for the Cause He Thought was Right” was A. Jack Houston, Co. I, 35th Miss. Infantry, from Louisville, Miss. This was positively affirmed Tuesday by J. T. McLeod of the same company and from the same town, while attending the veteran’s reunion in Atlanta.
LOUISVILLE: Dr. Montgomery reports the birth of a fine girl in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Jones, and one in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hollis, on the 20th inst. - The ginners report up to Sept. 25th this year showed only 147 bales ginned as against 609 same time last year in our county. - Hunt Kennedy of New Albany was guest of his sister, Mrs. R. R. Crumpton last Sunday. - William Bennett, Roy Craig and Dan Suber of A. & M. college were welcome guests in their respective homes this last weekend. - Mr. W. W. Coleman, one of the few faithful old vets remaining, and who was able to attend the Reunion at Atlanta, gave us a call this week. He had just returned from his trip and told us he visited his birthplace in Carolina while on his trip, even going to the old home of his birth and found the house in good state of preservation.
MARRIAGES: A marriage of note was that of Mr. O. W. Wood and Miss Byrdie Kinard at Loakfoma Saturday, Oct. 18th, Rev. J. E. Wills officiating. Mr. Wood is a son of Mrs. R. L. Wood and holds a responsible position with the Railroad.
75 Years Ago – October 27, 1944
FRONT PAGE: T/Sgt Harold K. Hooks, U.S.M.C., died from his wounds incurred July 21. He leaves his wife, father, three sisters, and three brothers. - W. E. Turner brought us a Winston County Tax Receipt for 160 acres of land dated Dec. 19, 1878. The receipt was made to T. J. Turner, grandfather of W. E. Turner, for $5.87, including $1.00 poll tax. Mr. Turner’s brother is now living on the old home place.
DEATHS: Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Russell Liddell, 89, widow of the late J. A. Liddell, were held at Mt. Carmel Oct. 21, with burial in the church cemetery. She came to Noxapater as a new bride in 1875. She is survived by 8 daughters, 1 son, 1 sister, 38 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. - Funeral services for William “Bill” Cook Greer, 53, were held at Louisville Baptist Church Tuesday with interment in Masonic cemetery. He passed away in a Jackson hospital Oct. 23, a long sufferer of asthma. Born in Neshoba county, he moved to Louisville as a young boy. First married to Miss Lillian Danial, who died about 7 years ago, he married Mrs. Zetta Hodges. He is survived by his wife, 4children, his mother, 2 sisters and 2 brothers. - Charles Reed Aycock, 63, passed away Oct. 25 at his home on Metts street. He was subject to angina attacks and suffered an attack Tuesday night. Born in Rose Hill in 1881, he was first married to Miss Maude Chatham, who passed about 4 years ago. He moved to Louisville in 1941 and remarried, to Miss Beula Avery. Services were held Rose Hill Methodist church with burial in Green Valley Methodist Church. Left behind is his wife, 3 daughters, 2 sons, a sister, one brother, and 7 grandchildren. - New Hope reported the death of the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Vivian Halfacree October 19th. - Funeral services were held for Mr. John Wilkes Estes, 75, at Noxapater Baptist Church Tuesday, with burial in the church cemetery. He was a son of the late Mr. W. E. and Mrs. Neppie Estes and was born and reared here. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 2 daughters and 5 sisters.
LOUISVILLE: Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eaves honored Mr. W. F. Hooks at his 76th birthday. Lunch was served picnic style. - Mrs. William L. Wright and children are visiting her sister, Mrs. E. M. Legg and family of Hattiesburg. - Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Murphree and children spent last weekend visiting Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Herring and family in Tylertown and attended the State-LSU game in Baton Rouge Saturday,
WEDDINGS: Mrs. Mattie Sue Triplett of West Point and J. W. Harris, Sr. of Louisville were married Oct. 21, 1944. - Miss Velin Homer Goodin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Goodin of Louisville, and Cpl. J. C. Adcock, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Adcock of Gholson, were married Sept. 30th. - T/Sgt. G. J. Cherry, oldest son of Mrs. Littrell, and Miss Elva Wylie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Add Wylie were happily married at home Oct. 17, Rev. Kitchens officiating. - Miss Mildred Eaves, daughter of Mrs. J. M. Eaves, and Mr. Harvard Triplett, oldest son of Mrs. Annie Triplett, were married Oct. 7th.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. J. C. Hickman and son Joe Howard were Sunday guests of Rev. and Mrs. E. F. Graeser and family of Meridian. - Mrs. Mary Frank Bryan of Pascagoula was guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Webb and other relatives this past week.
