100 Years Ago – July 25, 1919
LOUISVILLE: J. H. Johnson of Ackerman, one of the most affable life insurance men in the South, was a visitor to our town yesterday. - J. B. Gage of Texas is visiting his grandmother, Mrs. J. B. Gage here this week. - Mrs. J. B. Webster returned this week from a visit to her daughter in Monroe county. - Mrs. W. C. Hanna and little daughter Ruth Claire returned this week from a visit to relatives in Alabama. They were accompanied by Ruth’s father, Mr. Huel Hanna.
DEATHS: Little Rose Mary Watson, the sweet little two-years-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Watson, passed away at an early hour Monday, after a brief illness. She was a bright child and a favorite among her associates. Her funeral was conducted at the home by Rev. J. E. Wills, assisted by Dr. Cody, Monday afternoon and her little body tenderly laid away under a mound of beautiful flowers in Masonic Cemetery.
MARRIAGES: DOUBLE WEDDING - Rev. J. L. Ward had a somewhat unusual experience last Sunday afternoon when he met two happy couples on the Ackerman road who requested him to join them together for life. The bridal party was Mr. B. E. Carter and Miss Nannie Lon Roswell, and Mr. B. T. Carter and Miss Irene Ellis. The grooms are sons of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Carter and the former bride is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Boswell, and the latter the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Ellis. This double marriage is the culmination of a long courtship, the engagements having occurred before the two brave young men enlisted in the army. - A wedding of much interest occurred Sunday at Ackerman, the contracting parties being Miss Bessie McCully of Louisville and T. A. Keeton from east of Sturgis. The bride is the sister of Winston County Chancery Clerk B. M. McCully. Mr. Keeton is a prominent merchant in Sturgis and a progressive farmer of Craig Springs. - Mr. L. C. Clowers and Miss Lydia Stevens were married Friday, July 18th at the Baptist Parsonage in Noxapater.
NOXAPATER: There will be a picnic at Noxapater on July 28th – the day the candidates are to be there. Everybody invited to attend and bring a basket. - Mrs. George Luke of Ackerman delighted her many friends here by a visit the past week, as guest of Mrs. Thos. G. Hopkins. - Mr. J. C. Garrett left a few days ago for Richton where he goes to take a position as bookkeeper. - Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Brister and little daughter are guests of Mrs. J. M. Harris.
BIRTHS: Judge and Mrs. M. B. Gillett are the proud possessors of a 11-and-a-half-pound boy, who made his arrival on the 22nd.
75 Years Ago – July 28, 1944
FRONT PAGE: KILLED IN ACTION: Mrs. Ester Rosamond received information from the Secretary of War that her husband, Pvt. First Class Forest C. Rosamond died June 7 as a result of his wounds in action in France.
DEATHS: Calhoun reported a huge crowd attended a beautiful memorial service at Vernon Methodist Church Sunday honoring the late Sgt. Flay Hill, who gave his life in service for our country Feb. 19th in the Marshall Islands. - Funeral services were held at the Noxapater Baptist Church Saturday for Mrs. Jane Caperton Johnson, 87, wife of the late Mr. Evan Johnson, and a member of one of the old and prominent families of this section of the state. She died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Sanborn, after an extended illness. She is survived by two daughters and one son, three sisters and four brothers, and a number of grandchildren.
LOUISVILLE: Sgt. and Mrs. Joe McCullouch of South Carolina and Mr. and Mrs. Claude McCullouch of Pascagoula were recent guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. C. McCullouch. - Mr. and Mrs. George Fields and daughter will leave this week end to make their home in Birmingham, Ala., where Mr. Fields’ job with a gas company carries him. - Louisville welcomes Mr. and Mrs. Q. C. Cockrell and baby from Benhill, Ga. to fill the place vacated by Mr. Fields.
WEDDINGS: Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Hight announce the marriage of their daughter, Bettye Louise, to Joe Covington, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edd Covington of Meridian. The ceremony was performed July 21 in Meridian, Rev. Spinks King officiating.
NOXAPATER: Mrs. E. A. Gunn left Wednesday for Rivers, Arizona, called to the bedside of her daughter, Mrs. Sterling Couch, who was seriously injured in a car wreck. Mr. Couch is also in the hospital as a result of the wreck. - Mrs. Hattie Mae Johnson is doing well following an operation at Rush’s Infirmary in Meridian.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Hoyle are the proud parents of a baby daughter, Bobbie Earl, born July 20. - Mr. and Mrs. Ceble Kinard announce the birth of a daughter, Catherine Dale, who arrived July20. - Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Hudson welcomed a baby girl, named Doris Annette, born July 23th. - Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ford are rejoicing the birth of a baby boy who was born July 23. - Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Ferguson announce the birth of a daughter, Cecil, who arrived July 12.
