100 Years Ago – July 18, 1919
LOUISVILLE: Mrs. R. E. Stuart and daughter, Geniveve, of Newton visited Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Stuart last week. - Ben Yarbrough, who has been in Indianola for some time, returned home yesterday. - Born, to Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Huntley, on 4th inst., a fine boy, C. C. Jr. - Mrs. R. L. Webb is critically ill at the home of her daughter at Sturgis and is not expected to recover. - Mrs. V. V. Eason returned home this week from an extended visit to her parents at Columbus. Accompanying her was a fine boy, born on June 27th.
MARRIAGES: Miss Gladys Gully and Mr. David Webster were married Friday at the Methodist Parsonage in Starkville, Rev. Greenlee of Grenada officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Gully. Her home is in Louisville and she is a member of one of the oldest and most highly esteemed families of Winston County. Mr. Webster is one of our promising young businessmen and is connected with the Kelly Drug Co. in Winona. The marriage unites two of the oldest and most prominent families in this section of the state. - Lieut. Terrill Giffin and Miss Belle Tomlinson were married at the home of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Tomlinson, July 5th. Lieut. Giffin recently returned from overseas.
The Confederate Reunion, Co. 6, 20th Mississippi Regiment, will be held at Webster, Winston County, August 1st. Will be called together by the sound of the bugle, by J. Pink Cagle. Everybody is invited to be present, especially the World War boys.
There will be an ice cream supper at Center Ridge on Saturday night, July 19th, for the benefit of the church.
The case of Frank McNeal, for killing Bill Williams and which case was appealed to Supreme Court and remanded back, came up Tuesday and was nol-prossed, the action of the Supreme Court hving virtually acquitted him in its decision. Frank left for his home in eastern portion of the county Tuesday, a free man.
75 Years Ago – July 24, 1944
FRONT PAGE: Sheriff George Woodward and Deputy Sheriff Edwin Mitchell left Louisville about 3:30 a.m. driving to Forrest City, Ark. to pick up Robert Dempsey, a witness in the Horton-Fant murder trial. Sheriff Woodward, driving about 35 miles per hour, about 5 a.m. about four miles north of Winona on Highway 51. Deputy Sheriff Mitchell died from injuries and the Sheriff was painfully injured. Sheriff Woodward was rounding a slight curve, saw the lights of an approaching vehicle and about the time he met the car, he saw the back of an Army truck about 15 feet away, parked without lights and directly in his path. He attempted to steer clear of the truck but failed, the right side of the car hitting the rear of the truck. - Walter Spiva, 49-year-old and a Winston County native, has been named by Gov. Bailey as Executive Director of the Mississippi Agricultural and Industrial Board.
DEATHS: Funeral services were held at Evergreen Baptist Church July 18 for Mr. Edwin A. “Mitch” Mitchell, 50. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Elsie Glenn Mitchell, parents Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Mitchell, two brothers and one sister. - Services were held for Mrs. Elnora Davis Lee, 79, at the home of her son, Lloyd Lee, with whom she was living at the time of her death. Other services were held at Plattsburg church with burial in the Lee family cemetery near Mars Hill. She was a native of Winston county, daughter of J. P. and Ellison Davis, early settlers of Ellison Ridge who later moved to Plattsburg. Over 50 years ago she married J. T. Lee, who with their five daughters survive her, as well as two sisters, two brothers, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. - Rev. R. B. Sharp conducted funeral services for Mrs. Ella Darby Carter at Camp Ground Methodist Church July 9th, with burial in the church cemetery. A native of Chester, S. C., she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Darby, to Winston county when she was in her teens. She married Frazier Carter who preceded her in death. In ill health for years, she died from a stroke suffered about two months ago. She is survived by three daughters, three sons, one sister, and five brothers, and grandchildren.
WEDDINGS: Miss Katherine White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. White, and Lt. Joseph T. Brent were married on July 13 at the home of the bride’s parents on North Columbus Avenue, Rev. C. P. Thrailkill officiating. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Brent of McComb. The couple will make their home in Oklahoma. - Miss Mavis Shumaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Shumaker of Hinze became the bride of Henry C. Hinze, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hinze at the home of the pastor, Dr. Hewitt of the First Baptist Church of Jackson, July 12th. - On June 29th Miss Illine Bane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bane of Louisville, became the bride of Theo F. Bridges, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Bridges of Noxapater, at the home of the groom’s sister, Mrs. Oneal Morris, Rev. E. B. Sharp officiating.
BIRTHS: Mr. and Mrs. William Forster announce the birth of a daughter, Susan Hull, 8 pounds 1-1/4 oz., born July 15th. - A baby daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Wright of Ackerman July 18th.
